# Private Rooms

Private Rooms lets members create temporary voice rooms and manage them through an interactive control panel. Room owners can rename rooms, change limits and privacy, manage access, transfer ownership, and more.

Everything on this page is configured from **Dashboard → Members & Roles → Private Rooms**.

### Set Up Private Rooms

1. Open **Private Rooms** in the dashboard.
2. Turn **Active** on.
3. Choose the **Control Panel Location**.
4. Choose a control panel style.
5. Choose which control panel functions should stay enabled.
6. Configure the default room settings.
7. Optionally configure Premium features such as **Reserve Categories** and **Owner Profiles**.
8. Save your changes.

When Private Rooms is enabled for the first time, Asagi creates the Discord structure required for members to create rooms.

### How Members Create Rooms

A member creates a room by joining the Private Rooms creation voice channel.

Asagi then:

1. creates a new voice room;
2. makes that member the room owner;
3. moves them into the new room;
4. applies the configured defaults and permissions;
5. makes the room controls available in the selected control panel location.

A member can only own one Private Room at a time. If they join the creation channel while they already own a room, Asagi moves them back to their existing room instead of creating another one.

Empty Private Rooms are automatically deleted after the last member leaves.

### Control Panel Location

Choose where members use the Private Rooms control panel.

#### Text Channel

**Text Channel** creates a separate text channel for the shared control panel.

Members use the panel while connected to the Private Room they want to manage. The selected action is applied to their current room.

#### Voice Channel

**Voice Channel** places the control panel in the text chat attached to each created voice room.

This keeps a room's controls directly alongside that room and is the default control panel location.

### Edit Style

**Edit Style** changes the emoji set used by the Private Rooms control panel.

Several styles are available to every server, while additional styles require Premium. Changing the style only changes the visual presentation of the controls — it does not change what the buttons do.

### Edit Control Panel

The dashboard includes a live preview and lets you disable individual functions you do not want room owners to use.

Available controls include:

| Control           | What it does                                                 |
| ----------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Rename**        | Rename the room                                              |
| **User Limit** | Change the room's user limit |
| **Privacy** | Lock, unlock, hide, show, or control text access to the room |
| **Microphone** | Mute or unmute a user's microphone in the room |
| **Trust User** | Allow a selected user to join the room |
| **Distrust User** | Prevent a selected user from joining the room |
| **Expel User** | Remove a user from the room |
| **Invitation**    | Send a room invitation to a user                             |
| **Assign Owner** | Transfer room ownership to another member |
| **Become Owner** | Claim ownership when the current owner is no longer present |
| **Information** | View information about the room |
| **Delete**        | Delete the room                                              |

Most room-management actions are intended for the current room owner. **Become Owner** is used when ownership needs to be claimed after the previous owner is no longer present.

### Room Settings

#### Default Room Name

Set the name Asagi should use for newly created rooms.

The default is:

`{{ user.username }}`

The room name supports Asagi variables and can contain up to **50 characters**.

#### User Limit

Choose the default Discord user limit for newly created rooms.

The value can be from **0 to 99**. A value of **0** means there is no Discord user limit.

The default value is **2**.

#### Limit of Rooms

Choose the maximum number of Private Rooms Asagi should allow at the same time.

The value can be from **0 to 50**. A value of **0** means Asagi does not apply its own total-room limit.

### Reserve Categories

**Reserve Categories** is a Premium feature for servers that may create many Private Rooms.

Discord categories have a channel limit. When the main Private Rooms category is full, Asagi can use the configured reserve categories for new rooms.

1. Enable **Reserve Categories**.
2. Select one or more category channels. You can also create a category from the selector.
3. Save your changes.

Asagi uses an available configured reserve category when the main Private Rooms category has reached Discord's channel limit.

> 🖼️ **Reserve Categories**
>

### Owner Profiles

**Owner Profiles** is a Premium feature that lets room owners save personal preferences for future rooms they create.

Depending on the action, an owner can save preferences for:

* room name;
* user limit;
* privacy settings;
* trusted users;
* distrusted users.

When the member creates another room, Asagi can apply their saved profile instead of using only the server defaults.

### Private Chatting

**Private Chatting** is a separate option on the Private Rooms page. It creates private groups using Discord private threads.

When enabled, Asagi creates a dedicated category and control channel with two actions:

* **Create Group** — create a new private group;
* **Join Group** — join an existing group using its invitation code.

A group owner can manage the private thread with options such as:

* view group information;
* rename the group;
* recreate its invitation code;
* change slow mode;
* exclude a member;
* delete the group.

> 🎬 **Create and join a private group**
>
> See how one member creates a private group and another joins it with an invitation code.

{% embed url="<https://files.gitbook.com/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F0Hy8ldYgZJ9GQJFAuYLR%2Fuploads%2Fd6Dkv7qedvBDibDnVr3l%2Fprivate%20chatting.mp4?alt=media&token=73b54b3b-3582-43ea-9f45-e9840ab34f4c>" %}

Disabling **Private Chatting** removes its Asagi-created channels and groups after the changes are saved. The dashboard asks for confirmation before this happens.

### Disabling Private Rooms

Turning **Active** off requires confirmation because the Private Rooms setup is removed when the change is saved.

Make sure members no longer rely on active rooms before disabling the feature.

### Permissions and Troubleshooting

Private Rooms depends on Discord channel, role, and voice permissions. Asagi needs sufficient access to create and configure channels, manage room permission overwrites, and move members into newly created rooms.

If rooms cannot be created or controlled, check permissions such as:

* **Manage Channels**;
* **Manage Roles**;
* **Move Members**.

When the control panel is placed in a text channel, Asagi must also be able to access the channel and send the control panel message.

Private Chatting additionally relies on Discord thread permissions, including **Manage Threads**, **Create Private Threads**, and **Send Messages in Threads**.

If an action cannot be completed because a required Discord resource or permission is unavailable, Asagi can surface the problem through dashboard notifications.

### Where to Go Next

You have now covered the **Members & Roles** section. Continue with the next documentation category to configure more Asagi features.
