Greetings & Farewells

Greetings & Farewells helps you welcome new members, say goodbye when someone leaves, automatically assign roles, and restore selected member data when someone rejoins your server.

Everything on this page is configured from Dashboard → Members & Roles → Greetings & Farewells.

Asagi ignores bot accounts for welcome messages, farewell messages, automatic roles, and member recovery.

Welcome New Members in a Channel

Use a channel greeting when you want Asagi to post a welcome message whenever a member joins.

  1. Open Greetings & Farewells in the dashboard.

  2. Enable Welcome new members in a channel.

  3. Choose a text or announcement channel. You can also create a channel from the selector.

  4. Choose the message you want Asagi to send.

  5. Optionally attach a welcome card.

  6. Optionally enable automatic deletion of the welcome message.

  7. Save your changes.

🎬 Set up a welcome message

Choose the Message Content

Welcome, farewell, and DM messages use the same three content modes:

  • Default — use Asagi's built-in message.

  • Custom — create your own text or embed with the message editor.

  • My Templates — reuse one of your saved Embed Messages templates.

You can use supported Asagi message variables in custom messages. See Message Formatting and Variables for the full reference.

Welcome Card

Enable Attach a welcome card to send a generated welcome image together with the message.

The card is optional and can be used with the default message, a custom message, or a saved template.

Auto-delete Message

Auto-delete message is a Premium option for channel greetings. When enabled, Asagi removes the welcome message after the selected delay.

You can choose seconds, minutes, hours, or days. The supported range is from 10 seconds up to 7 days.

Welcome New Members in DMs

You can send a private welcome message directly to every new member.

  1. Enable Welcome new members in DMs.

  2. Choose Default, Custom, or My Templates.

  3. Optionally attach a welcome card.

  4. Save your changes.

A member must be able to receive a DM from Asagi.

Say Goodbye in a Channel

Farewell messages work in the same way as channel greetings, but they are sent when a member leaves the server.

  1. Enable Say goodbye in a channel.

  2. Choose a text or announcement channel.

  3. Choose Default, Custom, or My Templates.

  4. Optionally attach a farewell card.

  5. Optionally enable automatic deletion.

  6. Save your changes.

Assign Roles to New Members

Automatic Roles let Asagi give selected roles to members when they join the server.

  1. Enable Assign roles to new members.

  2. Select one or more roles.

  3. Save your changes.

🖼️ Automatic Roles

Roles selected here are automatically assigned to new members when they join the server.

Asagi can only assign roles that it is allowed to manage. Its highest Discord role must be above every role you select, and Asagi needs the Manage Roles permission.

If Role Recovery is also enabled, automatic roles are still applied when a returning member rejoins. They are not stored as part of that member's recovered role list because Asagi applies them separately as automatic roles.

Restore Returning Members

Asagi can remember selected member data and restore it when someone leaves and later rejoins the server.

The recovery section contains three options:

  • Roles — restore the member's saved roles.

  • Nicknames — restore the member's saved server nickname.

  • Strict Roles — exclude selected roles from role recovery.

Restore Roles

Enable Roles if you want Asagi to save a member's current roles and restore them when that member rejoins.

The following are not stored as recoverable roles:

  • @everyone;

  • roles selected under Strict Roles;

  • roles already configured as Automatic Roles.

Asagi still applies Automatic Roles on rejoin.

Restore Nicknames

Enable Nicknames to restore a member's last saved server nickname when they rejoin.

Asagi needs permission to manage that member's nickname. Discord role hierarchy can prevent nickname restoration for members Asagi cannot manage.

Strict Roles

Strict Roles are roles that must never be saved or restored by the recovery system.

Use this for roles that should only be granted manually or by another controlled process, such as temporary staff roles, verification states, or event-specific access.

  1. Enable Strict Roles.

  2. Select the roles that should be excluded from recovery.

  3. Save your changes.

🎬 Configure member recovery

See how to restore roles while excluding selected Strict Roles.

Permissions and Troubleshooting

If a greeting or farewell message is not sent, check that Asagi can View Channel, Send Messages, and Embed Links where required. Welcome and farewell cards also need permission to attach files.

If Automatic Roles or Role Recovery cannot assign a role, check that:

  • Asagi has Manage Roles;

  • the Asagi role is above the role being assigned;

  • the role still exists and is not a managed/bot role that Asagi cannot control.

If nickname recovery fails, make sure Asagi can manage the returning member and has the necessary nickname permissions.

Asagi can surface delivery or permission problems through dashboard notifications when a configured target becomes unavailable.
